Sugar may help the medicine go down, but too much of it will send you back to the doctor.
Most of us know that soda pop has a ton of sugar in it. In fact, one can of Coca-Cola has more sugar (39 grams) than the American Heart Association recommends you should have in a day (37.5 grams for men, 25 grams for women). As we’ve learned more about the dangers of sugar -heart disease, diabetes, obesity and even cancer, the amount of soda consumed in America has fallen precipitously. In 1998, an average of 54 gallons per person each year were consumed, but by 2013 it was down to 44 gallons per person. A 2014 Gallup poll showed that 63% of Americans actively avoid drinking soda, and, for the first time in two decades, plain old water is again the most popular beverage. Yay water!
With the decline in soda sales has a come a huge increase in the sales of non-soda beverages such as teas, juices and energy drinks. However, you may be shocked to learn that many of the non-soda beverages you drink have just as much or more sugar in them as pop. Iced teas and juices often contain 2.5 to 3 grams of sugar per 1 ounce of liquid — that’s 30-36 grams per 12 ounces — and energy drinks are even higher in sugar content.
