Glass Bottles are the Best!
At Humm, we’re obsessed with brewing our kombucha with all the effervescence, yummy flavor and good bacteria possible. We’re equally attentive to the container protecting our refreshing brew of goodness. Here’s why:
Look around you. Is there a plastic container within view? Chances are the answer is yes. The ubiquitous plastic bottle is hard to avoid in our modern age of convenience. For proof, try wrapping your head around this staggering stat: Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles per hour. That’s right, per hour. That’s more than 21 billion bottles tossed per year. Clearly, there is much room for improvement!
Let’s compare plastic to glass and see how we can make a dent in that mountain of plastic.
The Problems with Plastic
It takes vast amounts of fossil fuels and water to create plastic bottles. And since most of them are thrown away, these bottles wind up in our waste streams, our oceans and as roadside litter across the country.
Well, what about recycling? While always preferable to trashing, the problem is most plastic bottles and jars are not recycled. In fact, less than 25% of plastic bottles are properly recycled in the U.S. Yikes! And even if you do recycle that plastic bottle, it remains an environmental menace.
Since the plastic used to make bottles loses integrity when recycled, it can’t be reused in a similar way. Instead, in a process called downcycling, discarded plastic is used to make building products, carpet padding and other items, but not more bottles. That means plastic bottles and jars must be made with virgin plastic material — which introduces even more plastic to the world. And on it goes.
The Sustainable Glass Alternative
When it comes to beverage containers, glass beats plastic every time for several reasons. First, glass preserves the flavor and quality of the contents longer. We choose dark glass because it protects the live cultures, giving you the fresh, delicious taste and full health benefits of kombucha.
Second, glass does not contain harmful chemicals such as Bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates or polycarbonates that can leach out and get into your body. And there’s nothing refreshing or delicious about a phthalate.
Third, glass can be recycled and made into new bottles infinitely, so it’s sustainable and not subject to the diminishing returns of downcycling. This is better for our environment and also contributes to the $200 billion recycling industry that employs thousands across the U.S.
Of course, this only works when people recycle their glass. That’s where you come in. Have you ever seen a recycling container full of Humm bottles before? It’s a work of art! I mean, we may be biased, but seriously, it’s really beautiful.! We don’t want any Humm bottles contributing to the 28 billion discarded bottles and jars that end up in our landfills each year. So please, let’s all make a concentrated effort to do our part. Together, we can make a difference!
Improving our Carbon Footprint – One Bottle at a Time
This isn’t to say glass is perfect. It is heavier to ship so requires more fuel to transport. However, check this out…
To help offset the weight of shipping our product, we recently redesigned our bottles to weigh 29 grams less per bottle. And those grams add up! Our slimmer design reduces our carbon footprint by about 10% (woohoo!) by cutting down on the amount of glass and fuel needed to get Humm from our warehouse to you. Plus, our lighter bottles are manufactured in Portland, Ore., further decreasing our carbon output while also creating local jobs.
Kombucha on Draft
For the biggest bang for your buck, filling your growler with our kombucha on draft option. It’s the best of all worlds. Growlers are made of glass, can be washed and reused repeatedly and they keep your kombucha fresh and tasty longer. And getting it on draft is more cost effective for you.
If you live in Bend, Ore., the happy home of Humm, stop by our first-in-the-nation kombucha tasting room. There you can get refills of your favorite flavors while mingling with our friendly Humm-sters. And one of the best things about filling your growler — you can mix ‘em up! It’s always fun to create your own perfect blend of Humm with the exact right amount of Lemon Ginger and Pomegranate Lemonade and perhaps a splash of Coconut Lime. Plus we always love seeing you 3>.
