Jim Schell-Board Chairman

A serial entrepreneur, Jim Schell brought four Minneapolis-based businesses to fruition over the course of 25 years. Following the sale of his last business, Jim turned to writing and has authored six books on small business to date, including one of the nation’s leading sellers in that category, Small Business for Dummies. Since moving to Bend in 1994, Jim has either founded or co-founded Opportunity Knocks, CO 2-1-1, Volunteer Connect, TEDxBend, Looking Forward, and City Club of Central Oregon. He also led turnarounds at the Humane Society, Partnership to End Poverty, and the Boys and Girls club, and is a past member of the Governor’s Council on Small Business. Jim is a graduate of the University of Colorado. His wife Mary is also a successful entrepreneur.


Gary Fish

Gary Fish is founder and President of Deschutes Brewery, Inc., a regional brewery and brewpub located in Bend, Ore., with distribution in nineteen western states.

As the son of a grape grower in Northern California, Gary was exposed to the beer and wine industry at an early age. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the University of Utah in 1979 and began his restaurant management career in Salt Lake City. After years of managing and owning successful restaurants, he moved to Bend in 1987, and a year later opened Deschutes Brewery & Public House. In its first full year of business, the pub produced roughly 800 barrels of beer. By 2013 Deschutes Brewery was producing and selling approximately 385,000 barrels of beer a year. The brewery ranks in the top six craft breweries nationally for growth and volume and has won innumerable accolades both for the quality of its product and the business acumen behind its success.

For 24 years Gary served as president of Sagebrush Classic, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation that conducted a charity golf tournament and dinner. The event attracted golfers from throughout the region and chefs from around the world. It became the region’s most successful charitable event, raising well over $3 million dollars. The proceeds benefited children’s charities in Central Oregon.


Bill Owens

Admiral William “Bill” Owens is currently the Chairman of CenturyLink Telecom (the third largest telecom company in the U.S.) and also serves on the boards of Polycom, Wipro and Viasystems. He is the executive chairman of Red Bison, a company involved in telecoms and enterprise technology solutions. Most recently, he was the chairman of AEA Investors Asia, a global private equity firm located in Hong Kong, and vice chairman of the NYSE for Asia. Bill is the non‐executive chairman of private companies Eastern Airlines, Yangtze, Intelius, Humin and Flow Mobile. He was also CEO of Nortel and 2 other companies. Bill serves or has served on the board of directors of over 20 public companies.

Following a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy, Bill served as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the second‐ranking military officer in the U.S. He had responsibility for reorganizing and restructuring the armed forces in the post‐Cold War era. He has written more than 50 articles on national security and authored the book “High Seas.” His book “Lifting the Fog of War” was published in April 2000.

Owens received his master’s degree in business from George Washington and is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and Oxford University.


Martha Bejar

Martha Bejar is CEO and Board Director of Flow Mobile, which developed a broadband wireless access solution that makes it possible to turn emerging economies and/or low-density markets profitable in a vastly diminished period of time. She brings a wealth of experience, the ability to drive and support innovation, and a strong track record of leadership with some of the world’s leading global corporations.

Martha is a co-founder of the Seattle-based Red Bison Advisory Group, which identifies opportunities with proven enterprises in China and the United States to create dynamic partnerships. In addition, Martha serves on the board of Polycom and is a member of the President’s Advisory Group at EastWest Institute.

Martha received an Advanced Management Program degree from Harvard University Business School. She graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering from the University of Miami as well as an MBA from Nova Southeastern University. Martha is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. She enjoys golf, hiking, and fishing in the Pacific Northwest, where she now resides with her family.


S.J. Camarata

S.J. has had a diverse career including co-founding and helping to run several companies in software, mobile and web services, and in the medical technology, diagnostic and treatment sectors. He has served in executive management positions throughout his career and has served on or currently serves on a number of boards for private, publicly-traded and not-for-profit companies. He has executive management experience covering operations, strategy, sales, product planning, marketing, M&A and partnerships. He has worked with start-up, early stage, and established companies ranging up to and over $1 billion in annual revenues.

Current companies that he works with as either a director or board member include; Esri, ElectricXP, NewTech Holdings, Utah State University, Looking Forward and several others. He previously served as either an executive or board member of BendBroadband, Kids in the Game, Mobile EBT Scanners, GeoStrategies, NovaLIS, Open Geospatial Consortium, Xedar, Regional Alliances for Network Infrastructure Security, Trusted Sports, Swan Island Networks, BioMedware, Mobile Lithotripters International, IRIS International and the Oregon Environmental Council.

S.J. has a B.S. degree from the University of Utah and an MLA degree from Utah State University.


Jamie Danek

Humm Kombucha Founder & CEO

Jamie leads HUMM with endless energy, abundant optimism and a big heart, traits that have enabled her to find success at numerous startups during a career spanning more than 20 years. Previous to her time at HUMM, Jamie founded and served as CEO and national sales director of a multi-million dollar consulting firm before pivoting to create EON Organics, a natural products company with distribution throughout the East Coast.

Using the skills and knowledge gleaned from these successes, Jamie is now focused on driving the sales and business development side of HUMM. Her passion to make HUMM a market leader and to bring the healthiest, best tasting product to HUMM’s customers is rivaled only by her desire to spread joy throughout the world.

Jamie has a Bachelor of Science Degree in international marketing from Temple University.


Michelle Mitchell

Humm Kombucha Founder & Chief Culture Angel

Michelle’s passion for Kombucha started over a decade ago and led to her founding HUMM. She currently manages the graphic design team and tap room, oversees brewing methods and ensures that the taste profile of Humm Kombucha is both excellent and consistent. She also serves as the liaison between the company and its board. She believes her mission is to bring love and light to the world and is instrumental in creating an air of positive energy and forging a culture of joy and freedom at HUMM.

Her desire for continuous self-growth and interest in developing relationships around the world led her to take three years “off” from 2005-2007 to travel internationally. She is fluent in Spanish and studied Arabic extensively while spending time in the Middle East. She has competed in three Ironman triathlons, enjoys yoga and spends as much time as possible outdoors. She worked for six years in sales and fundraising for Great American Opportunities and the Southwestern Company before founding HUMM.

Michelle is a graduate of Central College where she studied music and Spanish.
